Memorial Day weekend - first the work

We have great neighbors. So great that we spent the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend all hauling dirt together. My neighbor told me Thursday that they were getting 6 yards of dirt (a combination of topsoil and sand) delivered the following day, and did we want any? Did we? Oh yes, it has been on our list for a year or two. So Friday afternoon a large dump truck showed up (while the kids and I were out) and dropped 9 yards (6 for them, 3 for us) in their driveway. And Saturday morning, the labor began. Wheelbarrows were gathered. Shovels. Small children in old clothes. And let the fun start.

Here's the evidence:

The dirt pile was so appealing that another neighbor kid came over to play, even though his parents weren't in on the dirt hauling. Note S's barefeet? He was so filthy after a couple of hours of hauling dirt. He had a birthday party to attend that afternoon, and so I bathed him before the party. When we got home, he was right back out to the pile, and so got another bath before the evening's event: Mariner's Little League night. (more on that later)
The neighbors filled their new raised vegetable bed, J filled out back beds and got about 2/3 of the front beds done. He devised a handy wooden ramp for getting over our low wall to the side yard. And our side neighbor offered her yard as a walkway to that part of our yard. And now there is a much smaller dirt pile in their driveway. I think the pile of dirt is warding off any heavy rain - maybe we shouldn't finish hauling, and then we'd have an extra long summer?
I'll have to look for some before and after pictures of the yard for another post.
