Weekend away with the family

A week ago, we took off for Whidbey Island. We've wanted to go for sometime, and finally made time in our schedule. The kids loved every part of the trip - from the ferry ride to the hotel.

We left Thursday afternoon and drove up to the Mukilteo ferry. After the ferry, we stopped at this awesome playground (thanks Pat F. for telling us about it,) at the South Whidbey Park (or something like that.) We could have brought lunch and spent the whole day there. It puts every other playground to shame. We then had a nice dinner at this little restaurant in Coupeville - which had homemade Pumpkin Cake - it was fabulous. The waitress said her mom makes it (and her brother is the cook.)

Friday morning we went to Fort Casey (the guns were the highlight) and Admiralty Head Lighthouse. The kids climbed all over the gun batteries, and were quite disappointed that the big cannons were under wraps for repairs. Good thing we found this smaller gun for them to climb all over. They also like the bunkers. We checked out the lighthouse and then had a nice picnic lunch at the state park.

That afternoon we headed up to the beaches at Deception Pass. G was asleep in the car, so I sat and read while J and S went to play on the beach. S started in socks and shoes. Then the shoes were wet, so he put on his rain boots. Then he waded in just enough for the waves to come up over the boots and get his socks soaking wet and fill the boots too. So then he was barefoot in wet jeans. Amazingly, he didn't care for the rest of the day that his pants were wet all the way up his legs! He had so much fun climbing on driftwood and throwing rocks it didn't matter. J also enjoyed all the military planes overhead.

We drove over the the bridge and walked down the trail to North beach (for which G was now awake) and got some more beach time - this time for both kids. It was a great day - and totally didn't matter that it was grey and 60 degrees. I'd love to go again - even just to visit the playground!
