We finished our summer projects of ocean boxes. We began this project in late June when we had ocean week at our house! After hearing from my friend Laura about her great plans for fun summer kid activities, and then finding this cool website, Kids Craft Weekly, I decided to have a theme for the week. My big plan was to end the week with a trip to the beach when the Aquarium's Beach Naturalists were there for low tide, but the weather turned rainy, and so I bailed on the trip.
But we did enjoy making ocean themed crafts - one per day. We made sea urchins from playdough and toothpicks. We made glittery fish and crabs from sponges and pipe cleaners. And then we made ocean boxes - with blue tissue paper and green shelf liner cut to be seaweed. After carefully arranging the critters in the boxes, ocean "week" was finally over. (Note that the "week" ended up being spaced over several months. The boxes were more of a project than I was ready for that week. And my intention to have theme weeks throughout the summer was only that - an intention. Maybe with more planning next year. Or for school vacations this winter.
S's box - with red and brown crabs.

G's box - with pink and green crabs.
Another fun project this summer were the signs the kids made for their room doors with J. These are still taped up on their doors, although both kids are ready for new signs.
We ended the summer with my sister's lovely and wet wedding and had my parents visit after the wedding for a few days, including a trip to the Museum of Flight. We loved the control tower section of the museum, and the kids play area. We all enjoyed touring the Concorde and Air Force One, but were disappointed to discover that most of the planes that were in the outdoor display area were not open for public viewing. I really wanted to show the kids the upstairs lounge in the 747.
