Chugga, chugga, choo choo!
We took the train to Portland last week. A three and half hour trip each way. It was a big adventure, as we were carless! S and G loved the train, the hotel van, the city bus, and the light rail (trolley to them.) How many different forms of transportation can you fit into one trip? They also loved swimming in the hotel pool, looking at the river (G: we don swim in de wivuh) and riding the elevator. The hotel breakfast was also a favorite.
But one of the highlights for S and G was sharing a bed. You see, S has been telling us that when G is too big for her crib, she will share a bed (and room) with S. He has this all figured out. Why should he have to be lonely in his bed, when he could have a buddy? So he was all excited to share a bed with her in Portland. This was not my plan. I was expecting one parent and child to share the pull out couch, and the other parent and child to share the bed. But J thought, oh let them share a bed. So night one, we attempt to get them to fall asleep together. We read stories, we sing songs, we tuck them in with their animal friends, we turn out the lights. What happens? Much giggling... as they discover that they can touch reach out their feet to each other, and their fingers too.
S periodically gets out of the bed to come tell us that G is giggling and he is trying to sleep (yeah right, we hear both of you giggling, and see the lights turned on.) At one point, S tells G, "It is two hours past your bedtime!" and G responds, "S, it ih ahmo your bedtime!" By nine o'clock, with neither child nearing sleep, we gave up on this plan, and went back to the original plan. Alas. But night two, we were wiser. We got G asleep in the pull out couch, and then put S in it. He went right to sleep (no one to play with!) The only downside is when she woke up in the morning, she promptly woke him up, and he was not ready to wake up yet.
The other fun parts of our trip - OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. It was jam packed crazy busy with spring break kids, but our kids loved the preschool area - lots of toys to play with, stuffed animals to touch (germs!) and spaces to explore. We got a few new books as a memory of our visit. All in all a good trip - time together as a family, time away from the house, the dishwasher, the laundry, the chores. Fun for all!
We came home Saturday to snow on the ground. It had snowed briefly each way while we were on the train, and Saturday night at home we got a couple of inches again. We're hoping that the sun today means that spring is really here!

Your trip sounds fun, a transportation vacation. From your pictures trains seem nicer than I expected them to be these days. Did you jump the train just for fun or do they make sure seat belts are securely fastened before the train starts?
